Sonata No. 1 for Horn in C Major, Op. 56

A very special heartfelt thanks goes out to Jacek Muzyk for his guidance in approaching the instrument. Without his input, the piece (and ESPECIALLY the third movement) would not be what it is.

The horn is an instrument capable of transcendent melodic beauty. That is the primary quality I tried to tap into when writing this piece. On a more abstract level, I also wanted to iterate multiple time-streams, ala Carter or Nancarrow, in a way that would be indistinguishable from “classical” music—a piece that could be programmed alongside Brahms and Schuman without seeming like a non-sequitir.
